children with life-threatening illnesses across Canada
Mission Statement
-
Make-A-Wish®
Canada is part of the largest not-for-profit wish granting
organization in the world, serving 30 countries with International
affiliates on five continents. The volunteers of Make-A-Wish®
worldwide have helped make hundreds of thousands of wishes come true.
-
Make-A-Wish Foundation®
has granted over 162,000 wishes world-wide; more than 2,400 of them in
Canada. Across Canada, Make-A-Wish grants approximately one wish every
day.
-
In Canada, Make-A-Wish®, consists of eight
regional chapters (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, London, Toronto,
Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax), and a National Office located in
Toronto.
-
Make-A-Wish Foundation®
grants the special, personal wishes of children aged 3 through 17 with
life-threatening illnesses.
-
Make-A-Wish®
Canada was first established in British Columbia in 1983. The first
wish granted in Canada was to a young girl named Debbie, aged 13. Her
wish was to visit her grandparents in Germany with her father and
brother. Debbie went on her trip in 1983 and had a wonderful time
reconnecting with her family in Germany. Shortly after returning from
her trip, Debbie passed away. This first wish spawned an entire
organization dedicated to helping children.
-
Make-A-Wish®
does not solicit wishes. The granting of a wish begins with a referral
to the Make-A-Wish Foundation®.
Most referrals come from parents, family members or from the various
medical professionals providing care and treatment for the child. Wish
referrals may also come from the child themselves, their community,
teachers, or caregivers. Once the child’s medical condition has been
verified by their treating physician, and the child qualifies to
receive a wish.
-
Most wishes fall into one of the following categories,
“I wish to be . . . ”, “I wish to meet . . . ”, “I wish to go . . . ”,
or “I wish to have . . . ”.
-
Costs for wishes vary depending on the complexity of
the wish.
-
Make-A-Wish®
Canada receives no government funding. It relies on donated revenue
from individuals and corporations. All the money raised in Canada is
used to grant wishes to Canadian children.
